PINE STATE BISCUITS

2204 NE Alberta St. Portland, OR

Always a line up at Pine State!

We don’t have anything like this in Vancouver, so every time I visit Portland I always stop in at Pine State for some real American cooking.

Good-looking restaurant, fun vibe.

So, as usual, we went to Pine State and stuffed our faces. Biscuits, gravy, fried chicken, collared greens, grits, cheese…. all of it.

If you are on a diet… do not enter this establishment. Unless you have enough will-power to only eat collared greens and cole-slaw…..

Unless you can resist the smell of fluffy, buttery, fresh biscuits…….

Here’s what we ate:

The Chatfield (Fried chicken, bacon and cheese topped with apple butter)

The Reggie (Fried chicken, bacon & cheese topped with gravy)

Shrimp ‘n’ Grits

Biscuit with Egg and Cheese

Delicious, as usual. Felt a little queasy and greasy on the drive back to Vancouver… but that’s to be expected after an intense food experience.

GRILLED CHEESE GRILL

1027 NE Alberta Street, Portland, OR

The Grilled Cheese Grill is technically a food truck. But really, it’s much more than that. There is a truck, in which the food is ordered and prepared, but there is also an outdoor sitting area with tables, and a cool school bus/dining car where you can eat indoors.

The Grilled Cheese Grill serves only grilled cheese sandwiches. Everybody loves grilled cheese sandwiches. The Grilled Cheese Grill is open til 2:30am on Fridays and Saturdays. Everybody loves a grilled cheese sandwich when they’re walking home drunk at 2:00am. Win win situation.

The B.L.T.G.C. (Tillamook Cheddar, Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato on Sourdough)

The Kelsey (Tillamook Cheddar and Basil Pesto on Portland French Multigrain Wheat Bread)

You really can’t go wrong with a grilled cheese sammy. Thanks Grilled Cheese Grill. NOM NOM!

POK POK NOI

Pok Pok Noi, 1469 NE Prescott St, Portland, OR

I got to visit my favorite American neighbor this past weekend…. Portland!!!

One of the many, many things I love about Portland is THE FOOD!

I’d heard a lot of great things about Pok Pok, and it turned out one of their locations, Pok Pok Noi, was right around the corner from the house we were renting in the Alberta Arts district.

Papaya Pok Pok

Muu Paa Kham Waan (Boar Collar Meat)

Neua Naam Tok (Flank Steak Salad)

Loved the decor, loved the simple menu and the hide-away back patio. I did not love the food. The Papaya salad was soooo, so, so SPICY!!! I couldn’t handle it. You have to order rice on the side to be able to even attempt to eat it…. but it was too spicy for me to even enjoy. Some Friends I was with who’d been to Thailand said the food was authentic and they enjoyed it. I think I prefer the North-American style Thai food that favors more mild, sweet flavors like coconut as opposed to the spicy vinaigery flavors of Pok Pok.

Sorry Pok Pok, but it’s a NUH UH for me.

Cute lil’ Space

I’ve been to Grub many times now, and it’s never failed to impress. Definitely one of my top ten favorites in Vancouver.

At Grub they have a small menu of tapas, appetizers and salads, as well as a daily specials menu. They usually have eight specials, four meat varieties, two seafood, a vegetarian and a vegan option. Each time I’ve eaten at Grub I’ve ordered off the board and each time it’s been amazing. There’s also a three course prix-fixe menu option which is an amazing deal; appy, entree and dessert for $32. Can’t beat that!

Pescatarian Antipasto Plate

I ordered the Ling Cod special this evening. It consisted of a seared ling cod fillet with shellfish filled ravioli in a lobster bisque with mango and pineapple salsa. It was perfect.

Ling Cod/Seafood Ravioli/Lobster Bisque

Vegan Summer Berry Cake with Strawberry Creme

Chocolate Bourbon Torte

Seriously, I feel like this place can do no wrong. Some of the tastiest, most well thought-out meals I’ve had. And a good wine list and cocktails too! There’s something for everyone at Grub, I highly recommend! NOM NOM!
